The United States Puts Forward a Decade and a Half of Security Guarantees, States Zelenskyy.

In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that the US administration has presented a outlined settlement that includes security guarantees for Ukraine covering a period of a decade and a half.

The Framework's Specifics

Zelenskyy stated that in the course of critical discussions with American leader Donald Trump, he had asked for long-term defense assurances for up to five decades. Nonetheless, the current draft envisions a reduced assurance of 15 years from the United States.

The exact form is uncertain what these guarantees would assume, but the Ukrainian leader has been advocating for "collective security assurances, inspired by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's core tenet that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.

Diplomatic Advancements

Zelenskyy has said, American defense commitments for his country under the updated settlement framework have been 100% agreed, although the American leader expressed more caution, putting the figure at more like 95%.

Each statesman stated that advancements were achieved during the meeting at the US president's residence. President Trump did note, however that there were a couple of challenging remaining points, such as those related to land.

Conditions for Russian Talks

In related comments, Zelenskyy also told reporters that a direct engagement with Moscow would be possible once the US and European leaders endorsed a peace framework put forward by Kyiv to end the war.

This statement comes following Donald Trump stated publicly that he believed a meeting involving three parties between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen when conditions are suitable.

Background of Engagements

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have been without a summit since over five years ago. Their last meeting, facilitated by the French and German heads of state, was intended to renew efforts to settle the protracted hostilities.

More recently, in the spring of 2025, the Russian president opted not to go to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, turning down a face-to-face meeting suggestion to engage in peace talks in Turkey.

Outstanding Territorial Issues

A significant unresolved issue is the status of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. The US President indicated that a suggestion to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a demilitarised zone remains "unresolved".

Trump further commented that it will be known in the coming weeks whether the conflict can be concluded.

The leaders have stressed that the protracted diplomatic process would continue as they aim to achieve a final resolution to the nearly four-year war.
