No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
