Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was a passenger on the automated spacecraft in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also featured experts in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
